Gartner Analyst Says Cloud Computing "Immature" Yet Inevitable

Company VP Gene Phifer Speaks at IBM Conference in Manila

Cloud Expo Early Bird

As I continue to explore the potential of technology, including Cloud Computing, in Southeast Asia, I happened upon an analysis by a Gartner VP who was in Manila to discuss Cloud on behalf of IBM.

Gene Phifer, Gartner managing vice president, talked about the "buy versus build versus cloud" paradigm at the conference. Most importantly, he commented upon the inevitability of Cloud:  "Over time we will see cloud alternatives to every application from communications, collaboration and portals," he said. "Everything that you have on data center now should be in the cloud in due time."

Asked whether it is wise for companies to start building internal infrastructure, Phifer said companies can do so and turn towards cloud computing to drive innovation.

"Companies can deploy internal clouds today through virtualization. But technology-wise, it is still an immature market with a lot of players," he noted.

"There are aspects that make cloud computing risky at this point in time. But the space has got to mature," he said.
